Sierra de Tramuntana photos

The Sierra (Serra) de Tramuntana mountain range of Mallorca belongs to UNESCO World Heritage Site as a “cultural landscape”. It stretches from the western town of Andraitx to the northernmost cape, Formentor. The first traces of human presence on the landscape of the Tramuntana Sierra date back some five thousand years, with new settlers leaving their Talayotic, Roman, Moorish and Christian marks. The routes connect 19 municipalities and offer extraordinary views of the northern coast of Mallorca: medieval defence towers, farm buildings, monasteries, churches, Talayotic villages, castles and a palace of the Kingdom of Mallorca. The municipality of Alaró lies on an ancient Arab farmstead called Oloron. At present, the remains of the Alaró castle and the hermitage of the Mare de Déu del Refugi, located on the summit of Mount Alaró, are the municipality´s most important heritage, along with the farmsteads of Es Verger and Solleric. Mount Alaró measures 825 metres and Mount S´Alcadena 813 metres. Valldemossa is an old village in the mountains. Here you find a monastery where the composer Chopin lived the winter 1838/39. The houses are constructed of stone. It is a cool place and in the winter you get snow from time to time. La Beata is the saint protecting the village. All the houses have a small ceramic plate at the main entrance saying: Beata, pray for us!
