Bukhansan National Park and Hwa Gye Sa Temple photos
The Hwagyesa International Zen Center is located in the Hwagyesa Temple (the home of orthodox Zen Buddhism) which sits at the foot of the beautiful Samgakshan Mountain in the Mt. Bukhan National Park, northeast of Seoul. It is a part of the Chogye Order of Korean Buddhism. Zen Master Seung Sahn (1927-1994), who is the disciple of Zen Master Ko Bong and the founder of Kwan Um Zen School for westerners in 1984, opened the meditation room ten years later so that people from all over the world can practice (meditate) together and find their true nature, to discover who they really are. Residents at the Zen Center practice from morning to evening and do various jobs around the temple during the day. There is a three-month summer and winter retreat, but shorter temple stay is also possible.
Bukhansan National Park or Bukhan mountain is 836.5 meters above sea level. Its name means "north Han mountain," and refers to its location to the north of the Han River.
