The People’s Republic of China was established in 1949, with Beijing as its capital city. With well over 1.3 billion citizens, China is the world's most populous country and the world’s fourth-largest country in terms of territory. Although political power remains centralized in the Chinese Communist Party, China is undergoing profound economic and social change. Is is one of the most culturally idiosyncratic nation on earth, with 55 ethnic groups which account only 8 % of the population (Mongolian, Tatar, Uzbek, Tibetan, …).
China seems to me a very sad place. If it was a normal country, under constitutional government, China could lead the world. She has an energetic and talented population and strong tradition of intellectual endeavor. If it could let go of its non-Chinese colonies (Tibet, …), it would have a homogeneous population without any of the distractions caused by fractious minorities. China could quite easily be a nice place on earth. Instead, its national psyche is poisoned by the humiliations of the cultural revolution and China is full of stupid, reactionary and corrupt ruling class and Chinese people cannot make their voices heard.
